Read the following passage.
(1) Kyoto has many interesting places to visit and things to do. (2) It has many important historical places. (3) These include temples and shrines. (4) It also has many fine restaurants. (5) Kyoto's traditional food is famous all over Japan. (6) There are also places where you can see traditional crafts. (7) You can see, for example, Japanese pottery and weaving. (8) All of these make Kyoto an interesting place to visit.
What are the Parts of a Paragraph?
Paragraphs are made up of three parts. They are the introduction, discussion, and conclusion. The introduction tells what the paragraph will be about. The discussion gives more details or examples. The conclusion summarizes the paragraph or emphasizes the main point.
The first sentence in the paragraph above is the introduction. It tells you what the paragraph will be about. According to the introduction, this paragraph will give information about places to visit and things to do in Kyoto.
Sentences 2 through 7 are the discussion. It gives more information about the topic that the writer brought up in Sentence 1. In this case, the discussion gives examples of places to visit and things to do in Kyoto. The writer gives three examples -- historical places, restaurants, and traditional crafts.
The last sentence is the conclusion. It emphasizes the main point of the paragraph or summarizes the information. It tells the reader that the things mentioned in the discussion make Kyoto an interesting place to visit.
